Sodium lactobionate, also known as monosodium lactobionate, is a chemical compound and salt derived from the lactic acid and boric acid. It is mainly used as a pharmaceutical excipient in the production of drugs due to its buffering and stabilizing properties. It is often used in organ preservation solutions, such as the University of Wisconsin solution used to preserve kidneys, liver, and pancreas for transplantation. The compound is recognised as safe and has also found some use in the food industry as an additive and as a sequestrant. It is slightly soluble in water and more soluble in hot water, but insoluble in alcohol and ether. |
